A standard skim is one base coat at roughly £18–£28 per m². Polished plaster is a decorative finish built from three to five hand-trowelled coats of lime putty, then burnished and sealed — far more labour and much more expensive material.

What changes the price

Substrate preparation

Venetian plaster is unforgiving of a poor base. Sound, flat, freshly skimmed walls need only a primer coat. Blown plaster, old textured coatings, wallpaper residue or damp all add preparation days before any decorative work starts — commonly 20–40% on top of the finish rate.

Material choice

Genuine Italian slaked-lime putty costs several times more per tub than acrylic 'polished plaster effect' products, and needs more coats. Pigment also matters: deep, saturated colours and metallic or pearl additives raise material cost noticeably against soft neutrals.

Number of coats and sheen

A matte Marmorino is two or three coats. A true mirror polish is four or five ultra-thin passes plus burnishing and wax. Sheen is the single biggest driver of labour, and therefore of Venetian plaster cost per m².

Area, access and detail

Large open walls are the cheapest per m². Stairwells, ceilings, curved reveals, niches, feature panels and fireplaces are slower and are usually priced as a day rate rather than by area. Small jobs carry a minimum charge to cover set-up and material batches.

Sealing and protection

Bathrooms, wet rooms and kitchen splashbacks need a wax or breathable sealer to make the surface water-resistant. Budget a modest per-m² addition for sealing, and expect it in any honest quote for a wet area.

Location and timescale

Work in and around Manchester carries no travel premium. Projects further afield in the UK or overseas, and tight programmes needing weekend or evening working, are quoted individually.

Venetian plaster cost vs polished plaster cost

The two terms are often used interchangeably. In practice, "polished plaster cost" usually refers to the high-sheen burnished finishes — Stucco Veneziano, Encausto, Metallizzato — which sit at the top of the range because of the extra coats and burnishing. "Venetian plaster cost" covers the whole family, including the matte and satin lime finishes that are considerably cheaper per m² while still being genuine Italian lime plaster.
